"This is the most dangerous period that I have known," Chief of the Defence Staff Sir Richard Knighton told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. There have been as many incursions by Russian strategic aircraft into UK airspace in the first five months of this year as in the whole of 2025, he said, warning Russia risks "crossing a line". He said last year's Strategic Defence Review was a "call to arms", and while in recent decades the armed forces have focused on preparing for short, contained conflicts, the UK needs to be ready for longer wars like the one in Ukraine. His remarks come ahead of the expected publication of the Defence Investment Plan in the next few weeks, following repeated delays. The document, which will set out how new equipment and defence infrastructure will be funded over the coming decade, was first due to be released in autumn 2025. Defence Secretary John Healey said earlier this week that the prime minister is "determined to publish" it before a Nato summit on 7 July. Asked about recent criticism of the UK's diminished capabilities by the former defence secretary, Lord Robertson, and whether the government is willing to give the military the extra funding it has said it needs, Sir Richard said he was confident ministers are aware of the threats and are increasing spending. "Exactly as the prime minister says, we need to spend more on defence and do it faster. The challenge for ministers is to make those difficult trade-off decisions," he said. Sir Richard also spoke about the changing nature of warfare and the need to adapt. Drones and autonomous systems are going to become "increasingly important in the future of warfare", he said. On the threats posed to the UK, he said: "I'm very clear that this is the most dangerous time I have known in my working life. "And the risks and threats to this country are greater than I have known since the Cold War. "And it is important that society and all of us recognise and understand that and that may mean that we need to make different choices and different priorities." Russia is probing both the UK's "traditional military defences" and also through other means, such as cyber, sabotage and assassination attempts, he said. "So Russia is definitely raising the stakes and risks crossing a line," he said. Photograph: Australian Federal Environment Department More than 100,000 cockroaches worth $200,000 seized from NSW breeder in record-breaking bust The invertebrates were likely destined for the pet trade, including as reptile food More than 100,000 live, exotic cockroaches have been seized from a commercial breeder in New South Wales in a record-breaking bust linked to the pet trade. Biosecurity officials seized the animals, which have a commercial value of up to $200,000, from a commercial breeder in Bathurst in the state’s central west this week. The captured cockroaches included dubia cockroaches and Madagascar hissing cockroaches – one of the world’s largest cockroach species. The seizure is the largest of illegal exotic invertebrates in Australia. The federal environment department said because the cockroaches cannot be legally imported, they cannot be legally kept, bred or sold no matter how they were obtained. Exotic cockroaches have not been subject to an environmental risk assessment and their presence in Australia can spread disease and harm native wildlife and agriculture. “We take our job protecting Australia’s unique biodiversity and breaches of national environment law very seriously,” a spokesperson for the department of climate change, energy, environment and water said. “We’re seeing illegal breeding and trading of exotic cockroaches and we’re putting pet businesses and pet owners on notice. “If you are found to possess, breed or trade exotic cockroaches such as dubia cockroaches and Madagascar hissing cockroaches they will be seized and you could face penalties under federal law.” The cockroaches were likely destined for the pet trade, including for use as food for pet reptiles. Dubia cockroaches are a popular food for captive reptiles, but also frogs and some fish. “Reptile owners who have been using dubia roaches as feeders are encouraged to seek legal alternatives such as crickets and wood roaches,” the spokesperson said. Dr Carol Booth, policy director at the Invasive Species Council, called it a “shocking discovery” and congratulated authorities “for shutting down this criminal enterprise”. “It represents a massive biosecurity risk – not just because these foreign cockroaches could establish in the wild and threaten native cockroaches and other insects, but because they could introduce new diseases.” Booth said Australia had a “rich native cockroach fauna with many beautiful and interesting species” and more than 500 individual species described. Photograph: Ethan Swope/AP Wildfires devastating richer areas but fewer hectares burned globally – study ‘Megafires’ in California, Canada, South Korea and Europe in 2025, but changes to farming slowed spread in parts of Africa “Devastating” wildfires ripped across the wealthier parts of the world in 2025, a study has found, even as globally, the area ravaged by flames fell. Catastrophic blazes claimed lives, homes and jobs last year in California , Canada, Europe and South Korea. But the 335m hectares burned was the second-lowest since 2002, the review found, largely owing to the expansion of African farms that have fragmented landscapes and hampered the spread of large savannah fires. The disasters in 2025 included a Scottish “megafire” that torched more than 100,000 hectares – contributing to the UK breaking its record for burned area – and the Palisades and Eaton fires in Los Angeles, which were among the most destructive in US history . Record-breaking blazes in Spain and Portugal burned more than half a million hectares, while South Korea had its biggest and deadliest wildfire season on record. Fires accounted for more than 38% of insured losses from weather disasters in 2025, the study found. “2025 shows that a ‘quiet’ fire year globally can still be devastating,” said Matthew Jones, a climate scientist at the University of East Anglia and lead author of the study. “We are seeing a growing disconnect between total area burned and real-world impacts.” View image in fullscreen A wildfire roars through Galloway forest park in Scotland on 7 April last year. Adverse weather, inflamed by carbon pollution, turned some of last year’s fires into explosive infernos. In southern California and South Korea, the researchers found, high winds and dry vegetation pushed fires through densely populated areas, causing “exceptional mortality, mass evacuations, and major infrastructure losses”. Bass will face either Spencer Pratt, a former reality TV star, or city council member Nithya Raman, in November. As of Tuesday evening, it was still unclear who would move on . Los Angeles’s next mayor will be tasked with showing progress in curbing the homelessness crisis, an issue that has long vexed the nation’s second-most populous city, revitalizing Hollywood amid a production exodus and shoring up emergency response programs after last year’s deadly wildfires. The race initially seemed poised to be an intra-party match-up between Bass and her former ally Raman. But the contest took a turn in its final weeks as Pratt made substantial gains in polling and sparked national attention with controversial campaign videos and a combative debate performance. Before her time in city hall, Bass had been a fixture of state and national politics, serving long and respected tenures in the state assembly and US Congress. She made history as the first woman to lead Los Angeles, triumphing over billionaire developer Rick Caruso in the 2022 election, and was met with high approval ratings when she assumed office. In her first month in office, Bass declared a state of emergency on homelessness, a move to expedite the construction of temporary and permanent housing. Her office has touted Inside Safe, a program that clears encampments and secures interim housing, typically motel rooms, for people living on the streets. Discontent with Bass’s tenure intensified sharply following the deadly January 2025 wildfires, which killed at least 31 people. Bass had been in Ghana on an ill-timed diplomatic trip when the fires broke out. Her absence, coupled with reports about budget cuts to the fire department, sparked a barrage of calls to resign. Bass later called the trip a “mistake” and said had she been informed of the fire risk, she would not have gone abroad. The National Weather Service had issued warnings about “critical fire conditions” before her trip. Her approval ratings fell, and Bass later sacked the city fire chief. Since then, residents have been frustrated with a slow pace of rebuilding. Pratt has eviscerated the mayor’s handling of the wildfires, but critics have pointed at his own lack of political and government experience. Craig and Lindsay Foreman, both aged 53, were handed 10-year prison sentences in February after being convicted of espionage, which they both deny. The couple’s family, from East Sussex, have claimed they were not permitted to attend their appeal hearing. They were jailed after their arrest in January 2025 while travelling through Iran during a round-the-world trip by motorcycle. Foreman’s son Joe Bennett said “the dial needs to shift” as he explained the pair “don’t understand the process”. He said: “My mum, Lindsay, and stepdad, Craig, were not permitted to attend their own appeal hearing. “We don’t know if they received a proper account of what was argued on their behalf. “We know they had been asked to sign documents … documents they could not read, and they refused, but we don’t know the details of when, or what they were. “Their case has now passed to the supreme court, but we don’t understand the process, the timeline, or what, if anything, will be submitted in their name.” The couple’s family members said Foreman is on day 25 of his hunger strike and his wife is on day 16 of hers at Tehran’s Evin prison, adding that all communication between them has been cut off by Iranian authorities. Bennett said he met officials at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on Monday but left without “clarity on what pressure is being applied to Tehran”. In a statement, the FCDO said: “We are disappointed by the appeal decision and will continue working to ensure that Craig and Lindsay are returned safely to the UK. “Since their arrest last year, Britain’s ambassador to Tehran, diplomats and officials in London have been working to provide consular assistance. “This includes the ambassador visiting them in prison and facilitating calls with their family back in the UK. “Minister Falconer last met the family on 18 May and the foreign secretary on 17 March. “Both set out to them personally how unjustified and appalling we consider Lindsay and Craig’s incarceration to be, and the action that the UK government is taking to try and secure their release.” The FCDO warns all British and British-Iranian nationals not to travel to Iran because of a “significant risk of arrest, questioning or detention”. Services have been disrupted throughout Tuesday, with no trains running on some lines and delays or part suspensions on others, after members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) Union walked out in a dispute over plans for a 35-hour, four-day week for drivers. London mayor Sir Sadiq Khan called the strike "a sign of failure" and urged RMT and Transport for London (TfL) to "get round the table" before a planned 24-hour walkout on Thursday. TfL apologised to customers but added that by 06:00 BST, 60% of drivers had turned up to work - more than in previous strikes. It also said around half its services ran during the morning peak, but Tube usage was down 43% in the hours up to 10:00. The wet weather pushed many commuters on to buses or into taxis Across the capital, people faced delays and queuing in the rain for taxis and buses as they made their way into work and school. Unsuspecting tourists said they had been unaware of the strike action. By Henry Cowling BBC Sport journalist Inside the 25,000-seater Estadio Hidalgo in east-central Mexico, fans unfurl a tifo featuring a miner. In one hand he wields a pickaxe and the other a pastry with a distinctly crimped edge. He is flanked by two flags, both the same - black with a white cross. To anyone with a knowledge of the United Kingdom's southernmost county, this figure is instantly recognisable as Cornish. The fans of CF Pachuca, widely recognised as Mexico's first football club, are paying tribute to their roots. They are celebrating the story of how miners from Cornwall played their part in introducing the game to what has become one of the world's most passionate footballing nations, and one of this year's World Cup co-hosts. The transatlantic connection between Hidalgo and Cornwall starts all the way back in 1824. Mexico's mining sector, which had been the bedrock of the country's economic success, was in ruins after a decade-long war that resulted in independence from Spain. Its plight caught the eye of a mining engineer called John Taylor, who had been investing in Cornish mining with great success, particularly in the village of Gwennap. "He had taken a group of failing and flooded mines and turned them into a success and he looked at the mines of Real del Monte and thought, 'I can do the same there'," Cornish mining migration specialist Dr Sharron Schwartz tells BBC Sport. His involvement led to hundreds of Cornishmen going back and forth between Cornwall and Hidalgo in the coming decades. With this migration came a sharing of ideas, culture - and, of course, sport. Listen: Not by the Playbook - How Cornish miners brought football to Mexico The first reference on record to Cornish miners playing sport in Hidalgo is actually about cricket. In the late 1850s, before Association Football rules had been decided back in England, Cornish native and mining magnate Frank Rule set up a cricket team in Pachuca. "The football clubs came out of the cricket clubs," Dr Schwartz explains. "In fact some of them were interchangeable and the cricketers were the footballers." "There had been a rift between those in Pachuca and 'the mountain men', meaning those in Real del Monte. "When I read this I laughed, I thought 'how Cornish'. The Cornish love a schism. "They were told to get their acts together and make their team stronger." In 1895, there was a meeting held by Rule that led to the decision to amalgamate the Pachuca Cricket Club, the Pachuca Football Club and the Velasco Cricket Club to create a stronger entity. Lee Kendall, a serial violent offender, is serving a 21-year minimum sentence for stabbing Hall through the eye at her home in Truro, Cornwall on 1 June 2021. An inquest and a police watchdog investigation into the handling of the murder revealed a string of errors by public agencies that contributed to her death. On the fifth anniversary of Hall’s murder, her family has announced it is bringing a claim against Devon and Cornwall police and the Probation Service that they failed her right to life and right to be protected under the Human Rights Act. ‘They signed her death warrant’: how probation service failings left a violent man free to kill Read more The Good Law Project (GLP), which is acting for the family, will focus on Kendall being wrongly assessed as “medium risk” by the Probation Service, despite being convicted for two previous assaults on Hall and the police receiving 34 pieces of intelligence about his domestic abuse against her. The case will also question why police officers failed to enter her home despite a Crimestoppers call on 31 May 2021 from a friend that raised the alarm Hall was being strangled. As they drove away from the property, one of the officers was recorded saying: “What can you do? She doesn’t help herself.” Shaun Hall, who was 13 when his mother was murdered, said he hoped the case would prevent similar deaths by known domestic abusers. In his first public statement on her death, he said: “My mum was a victim of domestic abuse, which led to her murder by her partner. The police and Probation Service were aware of my mum’s situation. A dispute would have happened and then the police would show up. Quite a few times they came over and they were too late and it just made things worse.” In an Instagram video recorded for GLP , he said: ‘They made too many mistakes and did not take her situation seriously enough, which led to her death. If these mistakes hadn’t been made, then my mum could still be here today. All of this happened when I was younger. Now that I’m 18, I want to tell my mum’s story and help prevent this happening to other families.” A 2022 investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct found the police response was “unacceptable”. The reviewer said: “In view of the incident reported and the serious history of domestic abuse, the officers in my view ought to have done more.” In 2024 a coroner found Hall’s murder was “entirely foreseeable” and could have been prevented. Mainland Europe has always been a springboard for those in the creative industries, from gaining crucial first credits on a TV, film or theatre production to building a marketable resume and paying the bills while attempting to make it big in the UK or US. The Brexit impact on European touring for musicians has been well documented . In February, the singer Kate Nash said she had resorted to setting up an OnlyFans site to “sell pictures of my bum” to help cover a £26,000 loss on her last European tour because of the additional cost burdens. But there has been relatively little publicity about the impact of leaving the EU on actors and performers in film and TV, on cruise ships, on theatre tours or appearing in commercials. “Brexit has placed British performers in a cultural cul-de-sac,” said Matt Hood, the managing director of Spotlight, the casting directors’ bible that features tens of thousands of profiles of budding and famous UK performers. “What is clear is that the UK has amazing talent, and the opportunity to export that talent has diminished considerably post Brexit.” Between 2016 and 2023, performing arts exports to the EU fell from £1.15bn to £929m, according to the Office for National Statistics. By contrast, figures for creative industry exports to non-EU countries show an 18% increase over the same period, from £1.57bn to £1.87bn. Since Brexit, new barriers that have had a devastating effect for performers include visa rules that only allow work for up to 90 out of 180 days, inclusive of any European holiday time, and myriad customs, tax and other documents that can take an inordinate amount of time and cost to get processed, and can vary between countries. The performers’ union Equity cited one common example of a member being taxed on their accommodation costs because that was classified as a “benefit in kind”, which had a big impact on their net wages. Spotlight pointed out that, for UK performers, social security costs are deducted in the country where they are working – anywhere from 12% to 22% of their pay. This can be reclaimed but the process can take many months, and often requires paying accountants to chase the money. Photograph: Caroline Chia/Reuters Japan defence minister rebuffs claims of ‘new militarism’ levelled by China Shinjiro Koizumi says Japan valued as a ‘peace-loving’ nation while China expands military capabilities ‘without sufficient transparency’ Japan’s defence minister took a veiled swipe at China on Sunday, pledging to keep strengthening the military despite Beijing’s criticism of Tokyo’s increasingly muscular security stance. Under the prime minister, Sanae Takaichi , Japan has quickened its pivot to a more proactive defence policy, further shaking off – with US encouragement – its pacifist outlook in place since the end of the second world war. The change has drawn frequent rebukes from Beijing, which has accused Tokyo of following a reckless policy of “new militarism” that could destabilise the region. Japan sees largest protest in support of pacifist constitution as PM Takaichi pushes revisions Read more The Japanese defence minister, Shinjiro Koizumi, hit back on Sunday, saying “nothing could be further from the truth”. “Think about it. There is a country that has a huge arsenal of nuclear weapons and strategic bombers,” Koizumi said at the annual Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. “Japan has neither of such weapons. And yet, Japan is labelled (as) ‘new militarism’. Isn’t it strange?” he said, without mentioning China by name. China is thought to possess hundreds of nuclear warheads and has been rapidly developing its military in recent years. A diplomatic spat between the Asian rivals has been rumbling since Takaichi suggested in November that Japan might intervene militarily if China were to attempt to seize Taiwan, the self-ruled island that Beijing claims is part of its territory. Koizumi said that China was expanding its military capabilities “without sufficient transparency” and that its military activities were “a matter of serious concern for Japan”. Tokyo would “steadily build up its defence capabilities and make continuous updates with a high degree of transparency”, including in the fields of artificial intelligence, uncrewed systems and cyber and space defence, he said. “Japan’s past as a peace-loving nation has been valued by the region and by [the] international community. This fact will not be shaken by false claims, because it is a fact,” he said. The Shangri-La Dialogue is Asia’s top defence forum, bringing together security officials and experts from about 45 countries. In contrast to Japan – and its ally the US – China has sent a watered-down delegation that does not include its defence minister, Dong Jun, for the second year running. Koizumi said he was “feeling sad that we were unable to have the opportunity to have a meeting this time”.

Photograph: Danangelowe "artboii" Spencer/DAJS Visuals 2025 Bound by blood: new film highlights Jamaica’s outlawed obeah belief system Stew Peas focuses on obeah, an enduring African magic practice in Jamaica banned by colonisers in the 1700s A new movie from award-winning Jamaican film-maker Sosiessia Nixon shines a spotlight on Jamaica’s enduring west African-based magic and spiritual healing tradition known as obeah. Nixon’s tense, feature-length suspense, Stew Peas , tells of the story of Jamaican detective Tessa, who is obsessed with an old murder case. Tessa’s life begins to fall apart when it becomes clear that her husband, Neil, has fallen under the spell of her new maid, Marcia. The story takes a dark turn with the shocking revelation that Marcia has been adding a secret ingredient to Neil’s food – her menstrual blood. “This film focuses on the persisting Jamaican obeah belief, that a woman could ‘bind’ a man in a relationship by serving him a meal of the traditional kidney beans and meat stew, which becomes a potent love potion when her menstrual blood is added,” Nixon said. Nixon hopes the movie will spark a dialogue about the tension between Christianity and obeah, which is rooted in the country’s African heritage and still practised today despite being outlawed by colonisers in the 1700s – and still illegal today. “The practice of binding a man with stew peas remains very much taboo in Jamaica, and I wanted to open a conversation. I wanted to look at this belief system in depth. Jamaicans often say that belief kills and belief cures, meaning that whatever you believe, that is what is going to happen. So, does this thing really work?” Nixon said. Coming from St Thomas, an idyllic coastal parish on the south-eastern tip of Jamaica, sometimes nicknamed the “obeah parish”, Nixon said she was inspired by actual experiences. “Growing up in St Thomas, I was very much exposed to a lot of obeah,” Nixon said. Producer and actor, Ava Eagle Brown, who created Jamaica’s Black River film festival , said the film will resonate with Caribbean people everywhere. “There is so much of us in this film, the things that make us Jamaican – especially if you’re in the diaspora … it brings you back home.” Brown, who is also in the film, added: “It’s probably going to now have some men looking at their woman with suspicion and asking: ‘What did you put it in my stew peas?’” she said. “But on a serious level, I told my son to make sure he doesn’t eat any stew peas from any woman!” Sonjah Stanley Niaah, a Jamaican cultural studies scholar and the director for UWI’s Centre for Reparation Research , said the stew peas belief is linked to the African view that natural elements, including blood from menstruation, has an inherent potency.
