In an interview with Sean Hannity that will air in full on Monday, Graham β who was appointed by Governor Henry McMaster to finish the remainder of her brotherβs term β said she had βmade a decisionβ. βIβm in,β she told the Fox News anchor. Graham, 62, made history as the first woman to represent South Carolina in the Senate when she was sworn in last week. Her brother, Lindsey died earlier this month, aged 71, after what his office called a βbrief and sudden illnessβ. The chief medical examiner preliminarily ruled that he died of aortic dissection due to cardiovascular disease. Platner's departure followed a sexual assault allegation that he denied but forced his exit anyway. It sparked a wave of potential candidates eager to prove to Mainers that they could take on longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins. But by Sunday, the field had largely been cleared after Jackson supporters spent the weekend securing hundreds of delegates who promised to back him at the upcoming state convention. Under a never-before-used system to replace Platner, delegates will vote Saturday in Bangor on a new Senate nominee. Out of the 601 delegates who will gather this weekend, Jackson's campaign says they have 481 delegates committed to supporting him. Top opponents β ranging from Secretary of State Shenna Bellows to Nirav Shah, former director of Maine's Center for Disease Control and Prevention β have since dropped out, while Jackson announced Monday that he was focusing his attention on ousting Collins. "I'm grateful to Democrats across Maine for putting their faith in me and in what we're fighting for," Jackson said in a statement. "This didn't happen because of one person. It happened because hundreds of volunteers put in the hours, knocked on doors, made phone calls, and believed we could build something bigger than ourselves." There are challenges ahead for Jackson in a race with Collins Yet securing the nomination is only just the beginning of challenges facing Jackson. There's little more than 100 days until the general election, meaning Jackson faces an uphill battle raising campaign funds when Collins already has millions. Jackson also must implement a statewide campaign network and woo over the state's large independent base. As former state Senate president, Jackson may be more politically vetted than Platner was running as a first-time candidate, but the logger's backing of progressive policies will leave him open to plenty of attacks by Republicans, said Nicholas Jacobs, a political scientist at Colby College in Maine. The dented silver plastic Duro Rocket pen β used by the second man on the moon to save Neil Armstrong and himself from being βstuck on the moon for everβ β has a sale price estimated by Sothebyβs at between $800,000 and $1.2m. The lucky bidder will get the broken piece of circuit breaker, too. Both come from Aldrinβs personal collection. Armstrong and Aldrin had landed on the lunar surface on the historic Apollo 11 mission in July 1969 and were preparing to get some sleep after their first moon walk, when Aldrin noticed a small black switch on the floor of the cabin. As he writes in his 2009 autobiography Magnificent Desolation: βMy heart jolted a bit β¦ The broken switch had snapped off from the engine-arm circuit breaker, the one vital breaker needed to send electrical power to the ascent engine that would lift Neil and me off the moon.β The pen is expected to reach between $800,000 and $1.2m. Photograph: Sothebyβs In the letter of provenance provided by Sothebyβs, Aldrin jokes: βI think Neil broke the switch off and Neil thinks that I broke the switch off.β In his 2016 book No Dream Is Too High, however, Aldrin was more willing to take the blame for the incident. βBecause the breaker was located on my side of the capsule, I had apparently bumped it with the heavy backpack either preparing to step outside or when we had come back inside after walking on the moon.β Artemis II crew on their moon flyby: βEarth was this lifeboat hanging in the universeβ Read more Either way, as Aldrin says in the Sothebyβs letter: βIn the end, what mattered most was that we had to figure out how to solve the problem of the broken switch so that we could leave the lunar surface and get home to Earth.β The astronauts reported the issue to Mission Control, who hoped to reroute the power from that circuit. The huge lifelike image was pasted on the wall on Friday afternoon by a local guerilla artist seeking to foster West Midlands pride, both for the areaβs footballing stars and for its distinctive neon battered chips. Itβs since become a viral sensation on social media, and has attracted attention from a steady stream of passersby looking to celebrate their homegrown talent, from excursions of pensioners from the local old personβs home to a group of children with Downβs syndrome. The gusher of investment in data centers β likely topping $700 billion this year β to power artificial intelligence has made memory chips, computer processors and other equipment, as well as electricity, more expensive. Economists expect it will continue to push up inflation at least through the end of this year. While it won't be as large a spike as occurred in 2021-2023, when inflation peaked at 9.1%, massive AI spending is likely to keep prices rising more quickly than the Federal Reserve would like. Such increases could lead the central bank to lift its key interest rate later this year to cool spending and bring down inflation. Higher rates from the Fed often boost borrowing costs for auto loans, mortgages, and business loans. Fed officials will closely watch June's inflation report, to be released Tuesday, for further signs of AI's impact on prices. Inflation last month likely cooled as gasoline prices have fallen after a ceasefire was reached between the U.S. and Iran, though whether that trend continues is now unclear as the U.S. and Iran have resumed fighting. AI spending is lifting prices for consumer electronics Just four large tech companies β Google parent Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft β are expected to invest $720 billion this year, mostly on data centers. Those data centers use a lot of semiconductors, and chip supplies have run low. More people had applied to exclude themselves from service on religious or moral grounds in the first half of 2026 than in the whole of last year, according to figures provided by the government on Tuesday. For the period to 30 June, the federal office of family affairs and civil society functions, which rules on such requests, received 5,862 applications, a spokesperson said, confirming a report by the RND media group . This compared with 3,879 applications in the whole of 2025 and 2,249 in 2024. The federal office had previously reported that 2,667 of the requests were granted this year as of the end of May. Last year 2,830 were approved. Germanyβs constitution guarantees the right of conscientious objection, stating: βNo one shall be compelled against their conscience to perform military service involving the use of arms.β The move to apply for objector status is pre-emptive, since Germany has no active draft. Persistent high pressure brought prolonged sunshine, suppressed rainfall and enhanced evaporation, causing river levels to fall and water temperatures to increase. These unusually warm rivers are affecting electricity generation in France , as several nuclear power stations rely on river water for cooling. Under French environmental regulations, operators must limit the amount of heat discharged back into rivers, meaning electricity output may need to be reduced when water temperatures become too high. Earlier this month, EDF temporarily shut down a reactor at the Golfech nuclear power station after the Garonne River approached its environmental discharge threshold, while production restrictions are expected at the Nogent nuclear power station from 14 July if the river reaches its forecasted temperature. The prolonged heat has also increased electricity demand as air-conditioning use has risen across much of Europe. The same persistent weather pattern has also produced dangerous wildfires across the Iberian peninsula. Spain experienced several significant wildfires last week as prolonged heat, exceptionally dry vegetation and very limited rainfall combined with low relative humidity and periods of gusty winds to create favourable conditions for fire to spread rapidly. One of the largest fires occurred in the AlmerΓa province, prompting evacuations and extensive firefighting operations. It was 45 years before Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland were illuminating the current tournament that a Norwegian by the name of Bjorge Lillelien delivered the speech that has assumed legendary status. Norway, nowhere near the dangerous force they are now in September 1981, had just beaten an England side boasting players of the class of Bryan Robson, Glenn Hoddle, Kevin Keegan and Trevor Francis 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier. The win was a seismic shock, regarded as a national embarrassment for England and Norway's greatest triumph at Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo. Lillelien was not going to let the opportunity to pile on the agony for England pass him by as he directed a message aimed at the country's political and sporting figures - especially then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. A reserved man in private, he warmed up by accusing Polish referee Jerzy Kacprzak of being "close to receiving English citizenship" by playing what he felt was too much added time as Norway protected their lead. When Kacprzak finally blew the whistle, Lillelien was ready to let rip on the airwaves as the main radio commentator for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, known as NRK. A slightly edited version of his wonderfully excitable commentary is: "Lord Nelson. Lord Beaverbrook. Sir Winston Churchill. Sir Anthony Eden. Clement Atlee. Henry Cooper. Lady Diana. We have beaten all of them." And then came Lillelien's most famous words. "Maggie Thatcher. Can you hear me? We have a message for you. We have knocked your boys out of the World Cup. Maggie Thatcher. As they say in your language, in the boxing bars around Madison Square Garden New York, your boys took a hell of a beating." He then repeated for good measure: "Your boys took a hell of a beating." The last line, in particular, has been repeated Γ’ΒΒ and altered to suit the occasion Γ’ΒΒ ever since Lillelien delivered it. England did, contrary to Lillellen's claim, qualify for the 1982 World Cup in Spain, but no matter. Social media did not exist in 1981. The impact and traction of his commentary, had it happened now, would be mind-boggling. Lillelien, who was a hugely popular figure, died six years later aged 60, but has been immortalised by those words, which he always insisted were spontaneous, not prepared. The emotional speech has been preserved forever by the wonders of YouTube, helped by Lillelien, fluent in English, switching from his native tongue when he said: "Maggie Thatcher. Can you hear me?" and "your boys took one hell of a beating." England's defeat was one of the biggest shocks in their history, having won the first qualifier 4-0 at Wembley a year

But the manβs barrister, Dermot Dann KC, told the rape trial on Wednesday that the alleged victim had βmassive issuesβ in relation to her credibility and reliability, including having previously made false allegations against police. The man, who cannot be named, faces two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in Victoriaβs county court, and has pleaded not guilty. Opening submissions in the case were heard on Wednesday. The woman then felt the man rape her twice, Fisher told the court. βShe turned around to face him, and at that point she punched him with her fist to his face, to his nose,β Fisher told the court. βHe grabbed his face and said words to the effect of βyouβve broken my noseβ. βShe got out of bed and said to him βyouβre a fucking rapistβ.β Fisher said that the man started saying that he shouldnβt have drunk, that his nose was βfuckedβ and βwhy did I do thisβ, to which she responded βshut the fuck up, youβve just done this to me, youβre a rapistβ. The woman went to another room and started taking notes of what happened on her phone, before texting her mother, who called the police despite her daughterβs reluctance to involve them. The police arrived at the property shortly after an officer called the woman about 3am on 24 March 2023. Modi beamed as he accepted the Guardian of the Blue Horizon award from Patrick Herminie, the Seychelles president, complete with a trophy and certificate. The location in Alexandria, Louisiana, would remove logistical headaches caused by wrangling children from foster homes and shelters across the country and not having anywhere to put them during final preparations for flight. Those obstacles were apparent last year when Guatemalan children were awoken at night and given almost no time to get to Harlingen, Texas, where they waited on an airport tarmac for hours. A federal judge prevented their deportation, but the chaotic episode illustrated the challenges authorities face because they don't have anywhere to put families and children near the airport. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is calling the Alexandria facility a "staging area," not a detention center, and says people would only be there a few days at most. However, several immigration advocates expressed concern that children could be held at the new facility for weeks or months, which happened at other federal immigration holding sites. These advocates are also concerned about oversight, and say the facility represents a departure from how the government manages those children. "It's an expansion of the deportation system in ways we haven't seen before," said Leecia Welch, chief legal counsel at the nonprofit Children's Rights. "There's just so much that could go wrong with this facility." ICE has tapped a private prison company to run the deportation facility Unaccompanied children who are in the U.S. without parents or close relatives are not taken to facilities overseen by ICE. Instead, the law says they must be swiftly placed in the care of state-licensed shelters and foster care programs. Those are run by the Office of Refugee Resettlement in the Department of Health and Human Services. However, that agency isn't involved in the Alexandria facility's operation, according to a spokesperson at the airfield where it's being built. Instead, the facility would be run by a nonprofit arm of LaSalle Corrections, a private prison contractor, according to Ralph Hennessy, executive director of the England Airpark Authority. He said it could be operational as early as August. ICE officials signed a contract late last month to build the facility at the former military base near Alexandria International Airport, roughly 175 miles (280 kilometers) northwest of New Orleans, Hennessy said.
