Image source, PA Media Image caption, Thomas Tuchel took over as England head coach in January 2025 By Sami Mokbel Senior football correspondent Published 4 minutes ago England head coach Thomas Tuchel says reports about the state of the pitch for his team's friendly against New Zealand will not influence which players are involved. The Daily Mail , external said the playing surface for the match at the Raymond James Stadium, home of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was a 'plug and play' pitch laid just a week ago. Several pitches for World Cup matches are being played in stadiums that usually have artificial surfaces but which have been relaid with grass. Travelling ground staff from the Football Association were reported to be liaising with the venue over the pitch which appeared in pictures to be slightly disjointed in parts. England have no injury concerns and despite the start of the World Cup being so close, Tuchel said the condition of the pitch "will not affect my team selection". He said that he has "heard" it "will be OK". "I saw a photo from a journalist which made me a little bit worried and concerned, but let's decide when we are there," Tuchel told a news conference on Friday. "If there are any issues, we can always react to it. The plan is to play 45 minutes with two complete teams, to expose everyone to the same amount of minutes. "Then we can continue for the next three days with the same load of training. That is the plan and at the moment we are sticking to it." England are in Florida for a pre-World Cup camp in West Palm Beach and will play New Zealand on Saturday (21:00 BST). The game is the first of two warm-ups, with the other being against Costa Rica on 10 June (21:00 BST), before the World Cup officially starts on 11 June. England trained with 27 players on Friday in a session which did not include Arsenal players Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka as they were involved in the Champions League final on 30 May. Premier League players Josh King, Rio Ngumoha, Ethan Nwaneri, Alex Scott and Jason Steele have been training with Tuchel's squad to boost numbers. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson also trained having joined the squad following Crystal Palace's victory in the Conference League final. This video can not be played Figure caption, 17 wickets fall as England take control on another action-packed day By Sam Drury BBC Sport journalist at Lord's Published 38 minutes ago Michael Vaughan said he "feels sorry" for batters over the state of the Lord's pitch after 33 wickets fell on the opening two days of the first Test between England and New Zealand. The visitors closed the second day on 36-3 in pursuit of 254, leaving Ben Stokes' side seven wickets from victory. But while England will be confident of securing a morale-boosting win after their Ashes debacle in Australia over the winter, a number of former players have criticised the surface at the home of cricket. Sixteen wickets fell on a rain-shortened first day, with a further 17 in 79 overs on day two as batters struggled to deal with the variable bounce and considerable lateral movement off the pitch. "It's not a test for the bowlers, because it has been too easy. This isn't a fair balance between bat and ball," former England captain Vaughan told BBC Test Match Special. "The MCC [Marylebone Cricket Club] know this pitch isn't up to standard. "I feel sorry for the batters. This is the best place to play cricket. I feel very fortunate that I didn't have to bat on many pitches like this." New Zealand still need another 218 runs to win and unless conditions change dramatically, that looks a daunting task. "England will be thinking they need to keep it very simple," Vaughan added. "It's not a challenge for the bowlers – they just need to run up and hit a length. You know the pitch will do the rest. "That's not Test cricket, that is not skill. That's not testing physicality or skillset. "Bowlers have had a week when they've had plenty in their favour. New Zealand have to work out the best way to get 218 runs. I would say: swinging. "We've just [seen] Kane Williamson, one of the great technicians, the ball thudded into his back pad. There was nothing he could do about that. "If I'm watching that from the New Zealand dressing room, I'm not allowing that to happen. I'm going to go out and play a few shots." The MCC have offered no comment. England have huge chance amid more Lord's chaos Published 2 hours ago 'Dig it up and start again' - does the square need replacing? Questions were also raised during the 2025 World Test Championship final after 14 wickets fell on each of the first two days. By contrast, just a month later England and India played out a thrilling Test that went five days, but this year's pitch could lead to the match finishing inside three days. The batters' struggles were exemplified by a delivery from New Zealand seamer Matt Henry that barely bounced above ank

Photograph: Handout Chagossians urge UK to complete islands’ handover to Mauritius Chagos Refugees delegation says issue ‘hijacked within the halls’ of politics on visit to UK A Chagossian delegation visiting the UK has urged parliamentarians to complete stalled legislation to hand the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, which they say has been “hijacked within the halls” of UK politics. The six-person contingent from the Chagos Refugees group expressed their full support for the UK to conclude an agreement after the government was forced to shelve legislation when the US dropped support for the agreement. “It’s not a question of sovereignty for us, the most important is our rights,” delegation leader Louis Olivier Bancoult told a room full of Chagossians, some native-born, gathered in West Sussex on Friday. “There is not a real will for the British government to find a solution for our people. We need to find a way,” he added. “We’re still suffering and our position is clear, we have the right to live in our birthplace.” In 1996, Bancoult started a legal battle against the UK government and has continued to fight for their return after his family was uprooted in 1965 and unable to return after travelling to Mauritius for his sister’s illness. The delegation has also said the current legal restrictions under the British Indian Ocean Territory regime prohibit resettlement, and criticised far-right UK leaders and press over narratives claiming they are a “pure, isolated race” with no ties to Mauritius, and that they oppose a negotiated settlement. “We have watched with profound concern as the sacred issue of our human rights has been hijacked within the halls of UK politics,” said Bancoult in a parliamentary briefing statement. Delegation member Rosemonde Bertin was deported to Mauritius in 1972 and was the last person to give birth on Chagos Island, she told the room. She had the opportunity to visit Chagos Island with permission, and regretted how she was unable to spend more than a day in her birthplace. “How can it be that I was born in Chagos, but I cannot go there without permission and other people, third and fourth generation can go and stay there?” she said in Creole. Other individuals present, who left as children, spoke of the desire to return to Chagos Island and of their wishes to die in their birthplaces. Also in attendance was Liseby Elyse, who when forced to leave the island in 1973, suffered a pregnancy loss at four months. “[We] expect nothing more than justice for the hardship that we have suffered all these years,” said 71-year-old Joseph Bertrand, who lives in the UK after being f

By Chris McLaughlin Scotland sports news correspondent Published 5 minutes ago Martin O'Neill will continue as Celtic manager after two interim spells last season culminated in a Premiership and Scottish Cup double, BBC Scotland understands. Twenty years on from ending a five-year tenure as Celtic manager, he returned in late October on a temporary basis after Brendan Rodgers' departure, overseeing eight games. O'Neill made way for Wilfried Nancy but the Frenchman left after six defeats and only two wins from eight matches. O'Neill was back as Celtic boss in early January, appointed for the rest of the season. The league title race went to the final day of the campaign, with Celtic beating long-time leaders Hearts 3-1 to finish top. Then, at Hampden two weeks ago, O'Neill won his ninth trophy as Celtic manager with a 3-1 win over Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Cup final. And the 74-year-old has now agreed to stay at Parkhead after holding talks with the club's major shareholder Dermot Desmond earlier this week. Celtic have yet to officially confirm the appointment. His points average of 2.56 points per game in the league matched his corresponding figure from 2000-05. Robbie Keane, a one-time Celtic player, had been linked with the Celtic manager's job and has reportedly left Ferencvaros. Danish coach Jens Berthel Askou was also mentioned in connection with the Scottish champions before leaving Motherwell for Toulouse. To play this video you need to enable JavaScript in your browser. That resulted in a Europa League berth in the league phase, with O'Neill managing four of those games and the knockout defeat by Stuttgart. Former Leicester, Aston Villa and Republic of Ireland boss O'Neill had also managed Celtic in their November League Cup semi-final win against Rangers at Hampden, with Nancy in charge at the national stadium for the 3-1 final defeat by St Mirren the following month. Rangers were also knocked out of the Scottish Cup by O'Neill's Celtic at the quarter-final stage in March. More to follow. The good friends were supposed to meet in the last four at 18:00 BST on Friday for a place in a first Grand Slam final. However, Arnaldi's withdrawal was announced just 20 minutes before the players were due to step on Court Philippe Chatrier. It puts world number 14 Cobolli straight through to Sunday's Roland Garros showpiece, where he will face second seed and title favourite Alexander Zverev. Arnaldi had spent 19 hours and 42 minutes on court en route to the semi-finals in Paris - the longest anyone has played on their way to the last four of a major since 1991. The 25-year-old - ranked 104th in the world - was due to play in his first Grand Slam semi-final.
