David Sullivan watching a Premier League match between West Ham United and Crystal Palace last year. Photograph: Kin Cheung/AP David Sullivan: how did the pornographer rise so high in modern football? Sullivan hoped football would legitimise him but claims about historical conduct have led to his resignation from West Ham Sullivan steps down at West Ham to fight claims about private life W hen David Sullivan was growing up in a council house in Cardiff, he dreamed of becoming a professional footballer. Short and squat, he would never be a player, but later in life the fortune he built through the pornography industry and the property world gave him a route into the sport. The only problem, Sullivan discovered, was finding a club willing to roll out the welcome carpet for him and his business partners, David and Ralph Gold. They were fans of West Ham United and bought a stake in the east London club in 1991, only to find entry to the boardroom closed. “We had no contact with the board,” the late David Gold wrote in his autobiography. “They simply did not want David Sullivan and the Golds at their football club.” Connections to the world of adult entertainment counted against Sullivan and his associates. Knocked back, they looked elsewhere. They considered moves for Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur before settling on Birmingham City , who were in administration and struggling in the second tier of English football when they were bought by Sullivan and the Golds for £700,000 in March 1993. Photograph: Tom Jenkins/The Guardian In different circumstances, perhaps this would be the story of how Sullivan defied the blazers who shut him out, about how he took Birmingham out of financial difficulty and eventually became the most powerful man at West Ham. Instead, it is one with an unsavoury ending, and a tenure which club sources say had become “chaotic” in its final days, culminating in Sullivan’s resignation on Saturday amid accusations of “improper conduct” which Sullivan describes as false, and over which he has threatened to sue the BBC. Many inside the game will be taking in the news of Sullivan’s departure and reflecting on how a pornographer managed to rise as high in the modern game as he did. When he bought Birmingham, his first major football club, he was not a mysterious figure. It was well known that Sullivan was convicted of living off immoral earnings from prostitution in 1982 and spent 71 days in prison before a successful appeal led to his release. He was the owner of the Daily Sport and Sunday Sport, the notorious red-top tabloids known for their topless photoshoots and salacious stories. For Birmingham, financially stricken, those concerns could be overlooked. “How he’s made his money is unimpo

'I've matched with four men on dating apps - they were all scammers' 6 hours ago Share Save Add as preferred on Google Jonny Humphries North West Julie Osgood Julie Osgood decided to try modern dating for the first time a few years after losing her partner of 38 years to Covid A few years after losing her partner of nearly 40 years to Covid, Julie Osgood decided she wanted to give the modern dating world a try. But the experience left the 60-year-old, from Middleton, resigned to "staying single" - because the first four men she matched with all turned out to be scammers. Julie, who had been with her partner Tony Donohue from the age of 17 until his death in November 2020, described signing up to a dating app as "a really big step". While she worked out each fraudster's true intentions before parting with any cash, she said: "I'll never, ever go on a dating website again. I just don't know where you're meant to meet genuine people." 'Similar playbook' Julie said she wanted to speak up to help prevent other people falling victim to similar scams - and to put pressure on dating sites to take action. According to figures obtained by the BBC last year, the amount of money lost to romance fraud cases reported to Action Fraud went above £92m in 2024, up from £82m the year before. The first three times Julie was targeted on the same dating app, she said each scammer followed a similar playbook. Julie Osgood Messages of financial woe from the man Julie believed to be scamming her Pictures of the men Julie had matched with, shared with the BBC, showed tell-tale signs that they have been generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) - such as jumbled lettering on text in the background. "They all start off with similar stories," she said. "They've all been widowed except for this one who said he was divorced, but they all seemed to have teenage daughters who tend to live with their mother. "It starts off normal, probably for like a week or two, but then they've either got a go away on a business trip, while they were out on a business trip he lost his briefcase and he needed help with something. "It takes them a few weeks to actually ask for anything." After her initial disappointing foray into online dating Julie gave up. However after a house move in December last year and the last of her children leaving home, she decided to try one more time. "I am going be alone and I don't want to be alone forever," she said. "I thought the only way is really the dating website so I'll give it one more go, and I joined a different one for like a month to see how it went." 'Here we go again' This time Julie signed up to a dating app aimed at over-50s, called Ourtime. Soon, she matched with a man using the name Franck. In good shape and with fair hair, Franck told Julie he was an architect who had come to the UK from his native France three years earlier. Again, Franck claimed to be divorced and have a teenage daughter, but seemed genuine and after chatting on WhatsApp for

Photograph: PA Media EuroMillions winner dies after suspected hit-and-run in Essex Eighteen-year-old man arrested after car collides with cyclist Anthony Canty, who died in hospital four days later A lottery winner has died after a suspected hit-and-run in Essex , police said. Officers were called to the collision between a cyclist and a black Ford Ka in Tiptree at 6.30am on 21 May. The cyclist, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital where he died four days later, Essex police said. He is understood to be Anthony Canty, a key worker who helped save the life of a police officer who had a heart attack during the first Covid-19 lockdown. Weeks later, in May 2020, Canty won £1m in a EuroMillions draw. An 18-year-old man was initially arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs and failing to stop, the force added. He remains under investigation and inquiries continue. The suspect allegedly fled the scene in Maldon Road after the incident while Canty was taken to hospital in a serious condition. In April 2020, Canty gave the officer CPR after he collapsed while they were on a bus. The officer was airlifted to hospital and spent five days in intensive care. Canty said at the time that he stayed in touch with the officer’s partner while he was in hospital, dropped off fruit and flowers, and kept in contact after he recovered. The water supply worker, from Maldon, won the EuroMillions prize with his partner Katie Sullivan. Canty had vowed not to give up his day job. Police said they would like to hear from anyone who saw or has footage of a black Ford Ka car being driven in the area around the time of the collision on 21 May. Anyone with information, CCTV, dashcam or other footage has been encouraged to contact Essex police. Explore more on these topics Essex news Share Reuse this content
