Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Marco Silva managed Hull City, Watford and Everton before taking the Fulham job By Sami Mokbel Senior football correspondent Published 2 June 2026, 12:41 BST Updated 10 minutes ago Fulham head coach Marco Silva is close to reaching an agreement to take charge at Benfica. Silva's contract at Craven Cottage is set to expire this month but as yet there has been no official confirmation of the 48-year-old's exit. Fulham have offered their Portuguese boss a contract renewal but he is yet to accept. And it is understood discussions have progressed significantly between him and Benfica in recent days, with an agreement within reach. Benfica are looking to appoint a successor to Jose Mourinho, who has left the club and signed a three-year deal to become Real Madrid's new head coach. Mourinho, 63, took over at Benfica for a second spell in September and led them to third place in the Primeira Liga. Silva joined Fulham in July 2021 from Everton and guided them back to the Premier League in his first season, following the club's relegation to the Championship a year earlier. The Cottagers finished 11th in the top flight last season, level on 52 points with Chelsea . Contrarian view: Silvas move might dilute Benficas talent pool and weaken their competitive edge. His tactical style could clash with Portuguese footballs traditional approach, potentially stifling creativity. Lets not overlook the potential risks of such a high-profile departure.
