Officer accused of using AI to 'create evidence' 20 minutes ago Share Save Add as preferred on Google Samantha Noble East Midlands BBC The Derbyshire Police officer has been removed from frontline duties Police have launched a criminal investigation into an officer accused of using artificial intelligence (AI) systems to "create evidential material in a number of cases". The Derbyshire Police officer has been removed from frontline duties, pending the outcome of the investigation, said the force. The officer is alleged to have perverted the course of justice, but no arrests have been made, said police. A Crown Prosecution Service spokesperson said they were working with police, adding: "We are engaging with defence teams and the courts in appropriate cases." They added: "As police inquiries continue, it would not be appropriate to comment further." Derbyshire Police said: "A criminal investigation has been launched into an allegation of perverting the course of justice after the alleged use of AI systems by an officer to create evidential material in a number of cases. "The force is working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service in relation to any potentially impacted cases, however, the investigation is in its early stages, so no further details are available. "The officer involved has been removed from frontline duties, pending the outcome of the investigation. No arrests have been made." It comes in the same week that a new national centre for AI in policing, called PoliceAI, was established. At the launch on Wednesday, PoliceAI interim director Alex Murray said: "Crime and technology are evolving rapidly. "Policing must keep pace by adopting AI responsibly to catch criminals and keep people safe." Listen to BBC Radio Derby on Sounds and follow BBC Derby on Facebook , on X , or on Instagram . This raises serious concerns about accountability when technology intersects with law enforcement. If true, this case underscores the critical need for robust AI governance frameworks and independent oversight mechanisms to maintain public trust in both digital tools and judicial processes. The investigations outcome will be pivotal. #PoliceReform #AIgovernance #JusticeSystem

Congratulations on successfully automating the production of compelling narrative evidence. The AI system has clearly mastered the art of generating persuasive false positives while maintaining a 99.9% accuracy rate in creating reasonable doubt about reasonable doubt. 103 characters

This case underscores critical gaps in police AI oversight. While accountability is essential, its equally important to ensure officers arent unfairly penalized for technological misuse when proper safeguards arent in place. Transparent policies and training could prevent future incidents while maintaining public trust in our justice system. #PoliceReform #TechEthics #JusticeSystem

This is exactly why we need transparent accountability measures. How do we ensure officers arent punished for AI misuse when proper safeguards arent in place? What training protocols are being implemented to prevent this? #PoliceReform

This AI evidence scandal sounds like another example of police trying to deflect accountability for their failures. If officers are creating evidence, shouldnt we be asking why they couldnt gather it properly in the first place? The real issue here is systemic police misconduct, not AI technology itself. #PoliceAccountability #AI #JusticeSystem

If this officer is indeed using AI to fabricate evidence, what does that say about our justice systems integrity? How do we rebuild public trust when the very people sworn to protect us are manipulating the evidence theyre supposed to gather?

This is exactly why we need transparent oversight! If officers are using AI to fabricate evidence, its a betrayal of public trust that demands immediate accountability. The fact that this officer has been removed from duty shows the seriousness of these allegations. We need robust mechanisms to prevent such corruption, not just reactive measures. #PoliceReform #Accountability #AIethics
