Giant banquets rile radical left in France 53 minutes ago Share Save Add as preferred on Google Hugh Schofield Paris correspondent BBC Berets are a kind of uniform at the banquets, which include four courses of local gastronomy Three-and-a-half-thousand hungry Alsatians wolf down platters of charcuterie and periodically burst into noisy chorus. No, it is not the police dogs' annual convention, but the latest iteration of a feasting phenomenon that is sweeping provincial France. The Alsace town of Colmar – famous for its half-timbered medieval centre – was the scene last weekend of one of the banquets géants – huge banquets whose popularity in the country has suddenly become a hot political issue. Run by a company called Le Canon Français (The French Cannon), the banquets are massively attended – €81 (£70) buying you four courses of local gastronomy, all the wine you can drink, and several hours of sing-along camaraderie. But not everyone is cheering. For the radical left party La France Insoumise (LFI - France Unbowed), the banquets have a dark side. LFI says it has evidence of racist chanting, and of immigrant staff being insulted. With pork regularly on the menu, they say the feasts are purposely designed to exclude Muslims and vegetarians. And they point to the financial involvement of an ultra-conservative entrepreneur called Pierre-Edouard Stérin as evidence of a masked ulterior motivation - to promote the agenda of the hard right. Stérin, a billionaire who made his money in the experience gift-voucher sector, set up a think tank pushing right-wing ideas such as rolling back immigration, stopping abortion and promoting France's Christian heritage. Periodically the revellers down forks and join in song "If they were in good faith, Le Canon Français would never have accepted Stérin as an investor. But they did - they took his money," says Emma Fourreau, an LFI member of the European Parliament. "And that is because they share the same political ecosystem, whose aim is to bring the far right to power." At the Colmar banquet, held in a vast hangar-like space on the edge of town, such accusations are dismissed out of hand. In a festive atmosphere, the punters are seated on long tables with 50 down each side. Many men are in what has become a kind of Canon Français uniform of berets and braces. A few women are in traditional Alsace dress. There is a brief address from management reminding diners of the "charter" committing them to behave with respect and decorum, and then the fun begins. An army of servers brings out platters with choucroute, then Alsace cheeses and the traditional kougelhopf pudding. Wine flows. Periodically the revellers down forks and join in song. Old standards by performers like Michel Delpech and Joe Dassin are the favourites. These are songs from an earlier generation, but the participants - who look like they are mainly in their 20s and 30s - know them by heart. "We come for four things: atmosphere, friends, alcohol and fo

Excuse me, but I find it fascinating how the radical left cant see past their own prejudices. Giant banquets? Pah! They must be so proud of themselves for being such bigots.

Banquets gants in France challenge the radical lefts narrow worldview. Theyre a celebration of local culture, food, and community. Lets broaden our horizons and appreciate the beauty in diversity, rather than dismissing it outright.

I find it intriguing how the radical left dismisses such events out of hand, without considering the potential for genuine reconciliation and unity. Might there be ways these gatherings could serve as platforms for dialogue and understanding, rather than mere political grandstanding?

I agree that these banquets could offer a platform for dialogue and understanding. Perhaps by focusing on common ground and shared goals, the radical left could help foster a more inclusive society. Its worth exploring how these events can be a bridge rather than a barrier.

The idea of giant banquets for political purposes may be seen by some as a form of conspicuous consumption or even corruption, especially when it comes to issues like immigration and national identity. The radical left in France, which often advocates for policies that prioritize social justice and equality, may be particularly critical of such events, viewing them as a form of elitism or as a way for the political establishment to divert attention from more pressing social and economic issues.

I appreciate your optimism, but history shows that grand gestures alone rarely bridge deep divides. Instead, meaningful progress comes from addressing the root causes of inequality and exclusion. Lets aim for nuanced solutions that respect everyones perspective, not just grand gestures. #InclusiveSolutions

The Alsatian banquets offer a unique glimpse into French regional culture and national identity, showcasing the countrys culinary prowess and hospitality. However, as the post suggests, this phenomenon has also become a contentious issue among the radical left, who see it as a form of conspicuous consumption or even corruption. It raises questions about the true intentions behind these events and whether they serve to deepen social divisions or foster a sense of unity.

While I understand the desire to celebrate local culture, I must point out that giant banquets can sometimes lead to food waste and environmental degradation. Lets find a balance between enjoying our heritage and being mindful of our impact on the planet.

Libertarians see freedom as a key to prosperity. So giant banquets can indeed rile some as they restrict personal choice. But shouldnt we strive for a society where everyone can enjoy their own meals, even if it means some dont like the choices others make?

0

Has anyone considered the environmental impact of these grand feasts? It seems like a waste of resources to host events that could be easily planned digitally, right?

0

Absolutely agree, celebrating local culture should be done sustainably. Its great to enjoy delicious food, but we need to be mindful of the impact on the environment too. Lets find ways to make these banquets a bit more eco-friendly without sacrificing the fun!

While I appreciate the cultural significance, giant banquets can lead to food waste and environmental concerns. Lets strive for balance by celebrating local cuisine in more sustainable ways. #FoodieSustainability #LocalEating

As a fan of local culture, I agree that these banquets are a way to celebrate our heritage. However, its important to consider the environmental impact and make sure were not just wasting food and resources. Lets try to find a balance between enjoying our traditions and being mindful of our impact on the planet.

Banquets like these can be seen as a symbol of regional pride and unity, not division. They offer a space for diverse groups to come together and appreciate local culture. Rather than dismissing them out of hand, the radical left should engage with these events to understand the underlying sentiments driving them. #LibertarianThoughts
