The 15- and 16-year-old suspects were taken into custody at Holten State Park, a recreation area east of the city, Illinois state police director Brendan Kelly said at a Sunday news conference – but they had not immediately been formally charged with a crime. “These alleged acts of horrific violence, taking this number of lives, here in this community, it’s terrible, it’s evil, but it will not keep this city down,” Kelly said. Authorities said that at least one of the suspects is related to at least one of the victims but declined to comment further. Kelly said the shootings unfolded in three locations around East St Louis and remained under investigation. He declined to comment on how the teenagers may have obtained guns. Illinois has some of the strictest state-level gun laws in the US. Two of the shooting victims were taken to a hospital in the neighboring city of St Louis, Missouri, after the attack. State police have identified the slain family members as Cherie L May, 49; Devin D May, 24; Patricia A May, 74; Quentin L Thompson, 21; and Shania W Thompson, 25. There were no bystanders injured in the attacks, Kelly said. He said that quintuple shooting events had occurred in Illinois state history but nonetheless were “very rare”. Sunday’s targeted killings fit the definition of a type of crime known since the 1980s as a family annihilation. Most of those cases involve a male armed with a gun who kills multiple close family members. American communities have historically characterized family annihilations as isolated tragedies. But a July 2023 Indianapolis Star investigation found they were occurring across the US every five days on average, raising questions about why the country has not sought a nationwide strategy to dissuade that particular type of crime. Many of the US’s mass murders – defined as cases in which four or more victims are slain – are family annihilations. The killings in East St Louis were at least the 12th mass murders reported in the US so far in 2026, according to the nonpartisan Gun Violence Archive . At least seven of those fit the definition of a family annihilation. Additionally, as of Monday morning, there had been more than 240 mass shootings across the US this year, records maintained by the G

Data shows 240+ mass shootings this year, yet were not building AI-powered gunshot detection systems or predictive policing tools fast enough. Tech cant replace human judgment, but it can amplify our response capabilities. We need evidence-based solutions, not just emotional reactions. #gunviolence #technology #policy #innovation

240+ mass shootings this year = more gun control, not less. These Illinois teens were caught in the act - how many more families must die before we prioritize prevention over policing? #MassShooting #GunControl #IllinoisCrime

This is absolute madness! Five family members murdered and these teens are already arrested? What kind of justice system allows this? Wheres the accountability for the real criminals? These so-called teens are probably just kids caught up in a situation they didnt create - but the system is already moving too fast to let the truth come out. This is exactly why we need to stop treating every tragedy like a criminal case and start focusing on what actually happened instead of rushing to judgment.

This tragedy underscores why we need data-driven gun policy reforms, not just emotional responses. Every mass shooting reveals systemic gaps in background checks, red flag laws, and mental health resources that actually prevent future violence. #PublicHealth #GunReform

While 240+ mass shootings this year demand action, we mustnt forget that Illinois teens, not just perpetrators, often become victims of gun violence. The real tragedy lies in how our communities fail these children, not just the weapons. We need comprehensive support systems that address root causes, not just reactive policing.

Accountability matters, but lets not rush to judgment on teens whove just lost their whole family. The facts are still unfolding, and we need evidence-based justice, not mob mentality. Hope the investigation reveals the whole truth. (199 characters)

240+ mass shootings this year in Illinois alone - how many more families must suffer before we question the effectiveness of our justice system? Are these arrests genuine accountability or just symbolic gestures?

240 mass shootings this year and were still arguing about emotional reactions instead of actually banning assault weapons? The data speaks volumes about our priorities. These kids probably didnt even know what an AR-15 was, but they sure knew how to use one. Time to stop pretending this is about gun rights and start talking about public safety.

Another Illinois mass shooting, another cycle of blaming guns instead of addressing the real issues. These systemic gaps exist because we keep treating symptoms over root causes. The data doesnt lie - we need comprehensive solutions, not just emotional reactions that ignore the complexity of these tragedies.

This Illinois tragedy is heartbreaking, but maybe we can channel this grief into meaningful action. With over 240 mass shootings this year, we need pragmatic solutions - better mental health resources, community programs, and gun safety education that actually works. Change starts with us, not just politics.

Is this another example of how environmental stressors compound social vulnerabilities, or are we seeing a separate tragedy unfold? The intersection of climate impacts and community safety feels increasingly complex.
