Evoke has been locked in talks with the Athens-listed Ballyβs Intralot, which has extensive international operations including in the US, for the past two months . The deal comes four years after the heavily indebted Evoke, previously known as 888 Holdings, paid Β£2.2bn to buy William Hillβs network of 1,400 high street bookmakers. Since then, Evokeβs shares have fallen by 90%. The companies said the governmentβs announcement in November of a significant increase in remote gaming duty, from 21% to 40%, triggered a βmaterial shift in the UK operating environmentβ that will βcreate meaningful dislocation across the competitive landscapeβ. Shares in London-listed Evoke soared by more than 12.5% in early trading as investors welcomed the takeover deal. βIntralot continues to believe that the UK is a highly attractive geography and the current market dislocation presents a significant opportunity for consolidation,β the company said on Friday. Evoke, which is headquartered in Gibraltar, has net debt of about Β£1.8bn and a market value of just over Β£180m. The Evoke chief executive, Per WiderstrΓΆm, has previously said that the changes in gambling tax would cost the business up to Β£135m a year. In December the company appointed Morgan Stanley and Rothschild to conduct a review of strategic options in an attempt to βmaximise shareholder valueβ. Mark Summerfield, the chair of Evoke, said: βFollowing the announcement of the strategic review in December, we have been resolutely focused on how best to maximise value for our shareholders in light of the significant UK duty changes and the constraints posed by the Evoke Groupβs existing capital structure.β He said the deal represented βthe most attractive and deliverable outcome for Evoke shareholdersβ. Last month Evoke said it would close about 200 William Hill betting shops from May, blaming cost pressures including the governmentβs tax rises. Fifa president Sepp Blatter had to intervene to ask the duo to swap the trophies, with both looking suitably unimpressed. For the next 10 years, Messi or Ronaldo won every Ballon d'Or and Fifa award going. In fact since 2007, 20 of the 29 gongs awarded for Europe's player of the year has gone to one of them. With approaching 2,000 career goals between them, 85 trophies for club and country and countless individual awards and records, Messi and Ronaldo will forever be remembered as two of the most decorated players in history. It is a rivalry that has defined the last two decades of football, transcending clubs, countries and competitions to reshape how the game has been played, consumed and debated across the world. The US president said on Monday that he had stopped an imminent Israeli strike on Beirut and that he had spoken to Israelβs prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and representatives of Hezbollah and both agreed that βall shooting will stopβ. But on Tuesday, Lebanonβs state-run National News Agency reported 30 Israeli strikes across the south. Near the city of Sidon, rescuers recovered the bodies of six members of the same family, including two children and a woman, after an Israeli strike. The Israeli military also issued a new evacuation warning for the southern city of Nabatiyeh before new strikes, accusing the βHezbollah terror organisationβ of violating the ceasefire. Finalising a key element of an overhauled EU asylum and migration system, politicians have agreed a regulation that will enable national authorities to raid peopleβs homes to enforce deportation orders. People facing a deportation order who are deemed to be uncooperative or a flight risk could be detained for up to two years, extendable to 30 months, compared with the 18-month detention period under existing law. Those who refuse to comply with a deportation order could have benefits or other allowances cut. The regulation will also enable the creation of offshore return hubs, centres outside the EU where undocumented people would be held for unspecified periods, pending return to their home country. Several EU countries are in talks with countries, mostly in Africa, to create return hubs, although no agreements have been announced. The text agreed in three-way talks on Monday between the main EU institutions β the European Council, the European parliament and European Commission β will enable the search of peopleβs homes βor other relevant premisesβ and seizure of personal belongings in order to ensure compliance with a deportation order. Detention will be permitted for unaccompanied minors and families with children, βas a measure of last resortβ and βfor the shortest appropriate period taking into account the best interests of the childβ, said a press release from the European parliament. People deemed a security risk could face a lifetime ban on entering the EU, in comparison with the current 10-year maximum ban. The EU hopes the measures will increase deportations of people denied the right to asylum, those who have overstayed their visa or have no residency rights. Currently only about 20% of people with no right to stay in the EU are successfully returned to their home countries. EU officials hailed the law as an important step in the blocβs migration management. βWith the new rules, we have more control over who can come to the EU, who can stay and who needs to leave,β said Magnus Brunner, the European commissioner for migration, who drafted the original proposals . Robert Garcia, an incumbent two-term Democratic LGBTQ+ congressman, immigrant and Donald Trump critic, is considered the leading contender in Tuesdayβs primary race for the US House seat. Thanks to a successful restricting effort that redrew Californiaβs voting maps to favor Democrats , Huntington Beach is now part of Garciaβs congressional district 42. Californiaβs redistricting effort, known as Proposition 50, was overwhelmingly approved by voters in November. Trump set off a wave of new mid-decade redistricting after urging Texas to adopt changes to favor Republicans during the midterm elections. California soon followed, as have a number of other states, reshaping representation across the US. Tech billionaires are spending unprecedented sums in California races. Conservative officials in the city have expressed frustration about the changes underway. βItβs just California ugly-ass politics, and they are all about their agenda and not about the people. They donβt care about the people of California one bit,β Pat Burns, a Huntington Beach city councilman, told Reuters. The Orange county city of just under 200,000 people has some 56,367 Republican voters, and 41,156 Democrats. Its city council is entirely Republican, a group that refers to itself as the βMaga-nificent Sevenβ, according to SFGate . The Huntington Beach city council has become significantly more conservative in recent years as the city moved rightward during and after the pandemic. The city frequently clashed with the state over Covid restrictions β thousands of people protested in 2020 after the governor ordered the closure of local beaches. In 2024, voters approved an initiative to ban non-government flags, including the Pride flag, from city property. Meanwhile, the city was been in a years-long battle with the state government over its failure to comply with California housing mandates. Photograph: The Garden Museum Early portrait denied by Lucian Freud shown for first time after authentication Artist said Man in a Black Scarf was not his but evidence has emerged to show he painted it when a student in Suffolk An early portrait by Lucian Freud , which the artist denied was his for years, is to be exhibited for the first time after experts proved it was painted by him. Man in a Black Scarf was created in 1939 by the British artist when he was still a student at the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in Hadleigh, Suffolk. The sitter is thought to be John Jameson, a friend of Freudβs and scion of the whiskey family. The work became more widely known after it appeared on the BBCβs Fake or Fortune show in 2016, with the art historian Philip Mould concluding it was very likely a Freud . But the picture was complicated by the fact Freud had repeatedly denied the work was his before he died in 2011. In 1985, Christieβs identified it as a painting by the artist, but reversed its decision when Freud said he had not painted it. Photograph: Photographer Unknown The denial appeared to stem from Freudβs personal feud with the original owners of the work, Denis Wirth-Miller and Richard Chopping , with whom he attended the Suffolk school as a teenager. βHe was the golden boy, he was a star even then and there was jealousy,β says the designer and author Jon Lys Turner, who inherited the work and claims Wirth-Miller kept a list from their school days titled β13 Reasons to Hate Lucianβ. Wirth-Miller told Turner he could have the painting on the conditions that heβd authenticate and sell it βin order to infuriate Lucianβ. Turner then attempted to have the work signed off as a Freud over the course of 19 years β without success, as experts were not willing to publicly contradict the artist. Two years after Fake or Fortune aired, a new piece of evidence emerged which supported Turnerβs case. Students at the Suffolk art school had noted what they were working on at the end of each day, and records held in the Tate Britain archive showed that Freud had been painting John Jameson in 1939. The company, which has been fined Β£37m since 2023 for routinely failing to meet delivery targets set by Ofcom , revealed on Friday that 24.3% of first-class mail failed to arrive on time in the year to the end of March. The figures show that Royal Mailβs performance has worsened compared with the previous year, when 23.5% of first-class mail failed to arrive within the one-working-day target set by the regulator. Royal Mail invests Β£500m to tackle late deliveries as second-class post cut back Read more Under the watchdogβs rules, 93% of first-class mail must be delivered within one working day of collection, excluding Christmas. The latest delivery figures published by Royal Mail showed that it managed to deliver 90.2% of second-class mail within the three-working-day limit, well short of Ofcomβs target of 98.5%. In October, Ofcom fined Royal Mail Β£21m for missing annual delivery targets, the third-biggest financial penalty it has ever issued to any company. On Monday, Ofcom said that as part of its investigation it will look at whether Royal Mail is prioritising parcel delivery over letters, a practice which whistleblowers and unions have alleged but the company denies. βIn deciding whether Royal Mail breached its regulatory obligations, we will consider all relevant factors,β Ofcom said. βThis will include the question of parcel prioritisation, as well as identifying whether there were any exceptional events beyond the companyβs control that may have affected its performance. But the pale pink birds β called "fenicotteri" in Italian β are now flocking to Venice in record numbers, as ecological efforts to restore damaged wetlands could help expand their habitat and possibly induce them to nest in the lagoon. ANALYSIS: Why protecting very large swaths of land matters for wildlife conservation Flamingos β which most famously nest in Spain and France β started showing up in the vast Venetian Lagoon in the early 2000s, mostly in fishing valleys and mudflats in the lagoon's furthest reaches, with only rare sightings in the canaled historic center of Venice that is most frequented by global tourists. Venice Lagoon becomes an unlikely flamingo haven Environmentalists say their arrival in Venice as the European flamingo's range expands is a sign of the lagoon's health and suitability as a feeding ground. Last year, the number of wintering flamingos in Venice peaked at a record of nearly 24,000. That is 6,000 more than the previous year, numbers "that position the Venetian Lagoon as one of the most important wintering spots in its entire habitat range," said ornithologist Alessandro Sartori. WATCH: Conservation groups try to save tiny deer in the Florida Keys from a warming planet Sartori surveys the lagoon weekly by boat for signs of nesting, which would indicate a self-sustaining Venetian colony. So far there are no fresh signs after two nesting attempts, in 2008 and 2013, in northern lagoon fishing valleys suffered serious setbacks, including violent hail that killed dozens of birds. More than 90% of the birds counted in last year's census were in the northern lagoon, which contains a large area of natural salt marsh. The flamingos are also attracted by the traditional fishing valleys, semi-natural embanked wetlands that provide abundant food but can also bring them into conflict with human activity. Venice seeks to recover its lost marsh A project to reconstruct salt marshes in the more isolated southern lagoon β past the historic center and the industrial port β raises prospects that flamingo numbers will increase there as well by offering a new habitat in an area of the lagoon where wetland erosion has been especially severe. It could also draw the birds away from competing human uses in the north. Why renaming my health condition could help other women 12 hours ago Share Save Add as preferred on Google Shehnaz Khan West Midlands Rochelle Lewis Rochelle Lewis, 31, was diagnosed with the condition last year For Rochelle Lewis, it took years to confirm the reason why she had pains, excessive facial hair, bloatedness - and it was "absolutely devastating" when she found out it could affect her chances of being a mother. She was one of more than 170 million women globally to be diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition in which they have higher levels of certain hormones in their bodies. Lewis got her diagnosis last February which she said was a "long time coming" following years of symptoms and tests. She was told it could affect her chances of becoming pregnant, leaving her feeling "like my whole world had come to an end". "One of the things that I've always wanted in life was to become a mum," she added. "When you have an idea of your life and how it's going to pan out from a little girl, to then be told 'actually, the one thing that you want most is most likely not going to happen'. It's absolutely devastating." Lewis, who was inspired by her experiences to set up her own wellness business, was later able to conceive her son, who is now three months old. Getty Images Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) was renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) in May Earlier this month, the condition was renamed , from PCOS to to polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), with the International PCOS Network saying they hoped the change would improve understanding and help with treatment and diagnoses. For Lewis, who was going "back and forth" to doctors from around the age of 18, she hoped the name change would "open the door" to more women being diagnosed quickly, but was not convinced it would bring about wider change. "I just think that we get told that you have PCOS and you get left to it," the 31-year-old, from Birmingham, said. The NHS says the common condition affects up to one in 10 women in the UK with symptoms including irregular periods, excess hair growth and weight gain. PCOS name change 'more representative of condition' Kate Morris, from the charity Verity PCOS, said she hoped the change would lead to more women being referred to specialists who recognise its endocrine and metabolic nature. "It will give patients the leverage to say... 'it's in the name, what's happening to me is metabolic and endocrinological'," she said.
