Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Alexander Zverev has won nine clay-court titles, including four at ATP 1000 level Published 12 minutes ago Title favourite Alexander Zverev is one win away from elusive maiden Grand Slam title after holding his nerve to beat Jakub Mensik in the French Open semi-finals. The second seed is through to his fourth major final and his second at Roland Garros, having lost to Carlos Alcaraz in five sets in 2024. Taken to a fourth set for only the second time in the tournament, Zverev kept his composure to win 7-5 6-2 3-6 6-3 against first-time Grand Slam semi-finalist and 26th seed Mensik. Zverev, who has been the front-runner to lift the Coupe des Mousquetaires since world number one Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic suffered shock exits in the first week, will face either 10th seed Flavio Cobolli or Matteo Arnaldi in Sunday's final. Should he win, the 29-year-old will be the seventh oldest first-time Grand Slam men's singles champion in the Open era and the first German man to win a major since Michael Stich won Wimbledon in 1991. The seizure of 100,000 live, exotic cockroaches is the largest bust of illegal exotic invertebrates in Australia. Photograph: Australian Federal Environment Department View image in fullscreen The seizure of 100,000 live, exotic cockroaches is the largest bust of illegal exotic invertebrates in Australia. Photograph: Australian Federal Environment Department More than 100,000 cockroaches worth $200,000 seized from NSW breeder in record-breaking bust The invertebrates were likely destined for the pet trade, including as reptile food More than 100,000 live, exotic cockroaches have been seized from a commercial breeder in New South Wales in a record-breaking bust linked to the pet trade. Biosecurity officials seized the animals, which have a commercial value of up to $200,000, from a commercial breeder in Bathurst in the state’s central west this week. The captured cockroaches included dubia cockroaches and Madagascar hissing cockroaches – one of the world’s largest cockroach species. The seizure is the largest of illegal exotic invertebrates in Australia. The federal environment department said because the cockroaches cannot be legally imported, they cannot be legally kept, bred or sold no matter how they were obtained. Exotic cockroaches have not been subject to an environmental risk assessment and their presence in Australia can spread disease and harm native wildlife and agriculture. “We take our job protecting Australia’s unique biodiversity and breaches of national environment law very seriously,” a spokesperson for the department of climate change, energy, environment and water said. “We’re seeing illegal breeding and trading of exotic cockroaches and we’re putting pet businesses and pet owners on notice. “If you are found to possess, breed or trade exotic cockroaches such as dubia cockroaches and Madagascar hissing cockroaches they will be seized and you could face penalties under federal law.” The cockroaches were likely destined for the pet trade, including for use as food for pet reptiles. Dubia cockroaches are a popular food for captive reptiles, but also frogs and some fish. “Reptile owners who have been using dubia roaches as feeders are encouraged to seek legal alternatives such as crickets and wood roaches,” the spokesperson said. Dr Carol Booth, policy director at the Invasive Species Council, called it a “shocking discovery” and congratulated authorities “for shutting down this criminal enterprise”. “It represents a massive biosecurity risk – not just because these foreign cockroaches could establish in the wild and threaten native cockroaches and other insects, but because they could introduce new diseases.” Booth said Australia had a “rich native cockroach fauna with many beautiful and interesting species” and more than 500 individual species described. She said the fact there had been breeding of illegal exotic species on the scale identified by the Bathurst raid raised “great concerns about how widespread this illegal trade mig

Photograph: Ludovic Marin/AFP/Getty Images EU summit with western Balkan leaders to reaffirm membership prospects Macron, Merz and von der Leyen among those due to gather in Montenegro for talks on integration of six countries European leaders will seek to show six western Balkan countries that they have a real chance of joining the EU one day, despite splits over how to handle enlargement of the 27-member bloc. Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz, Giorgia Meloni and Ursula von der Leyen are among more than 30 leaders expected to gather in the Montenegrin coastal resort of Tivat on Friday for summit talks. The focus will be on integrating the six Balkan countries – among them Montenegro and Albania – more deeply into the EU single market, paving the way for them to join the bloc. “The commitment of the European Union to the western Balkans is real. As real as the opportunity for enlargement,” said the European Council president, António Costa, earlier this week in Sarajevo. Costa described EU enlargement, as Russia and China vie for influence in the region, as a “geostrategic interest for Europe” and an “investment in the peace, stability and security of our continent”. View image in fullscreen More than 30 EU leaders are expected to gather in the Montenegrin coastal resort of Tivat on Friday for summit talks. Photograph: Stevo Vasiljević/Reuters The summit comes after Hungary’s new government dropped its veto over Ukraine moving to the next stage of EU talks, a step hailed as a milestone by insiders. Péter Magyar’s decision on Wednesday enables Ukraine and Moldova to open negotiations later this month on the first chapters of the EU rulebook, the section dedicated to the rule of law and democratic standards. The two eastern European countries were fast-tracked to EU candidate status after Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. But EU institutions are anxious to show six western Balkan countries they are not in the slow lane. EU could deny new member states veto rights as bloc pushes for enlargement Read more Montenegro, which hopes to become the EU’s 28th state by 2028, is the most advanced in its membership quest, prompting existing members to put safeguards on new joiners. The Guardian reported earlier this month that new member states could be denied veto rights for several years, to prevent a repeat of the experience with the Russia-friendly former Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán, who repeatedly blocked EU decisions. Albania is seen by Brussels as the next country likely to join, although some EU governments harbour doubts about its progress in tackling organised crime. The hopes, meanwhile, of North Macedo

Photograph: Yui Mok/PA Man, 21, charged with attempted murder after Surrey University staff member shot with crossbow Former student Almunthir Daqamah, 21, due to appear in court on Friday while campus safety officer is in stable condition in hospital A man has been charged with attempted murder after a staff member was shot with a crossbow at the University of Surrey. Almunthir Daqamah, 21, a Saudi national, has been charged with attempted murder, possession of an offensive weapon, two counts of possession of a bladed article and possession of class B drugs, Surrey police said. Daqamah is a former student at the university. He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Guildford magistrates court on Friday. A campus safety officer in his 50s is in a stable condition in hospital. The police are not treating the incident as terror-related. Officers had been called to the student village in the west of Guildford at 10am on Thursday after reports of a serious assault. A police presence remains in the area to provide reassurance. Hiya Biswas, 19, a first year law student, described the campus safety officer as “very bubbly and smiley”. She told the Press Association students were “very shaken” by what had happened and said it was “terrifying” that it had happened so close and on the university campus. Ch Supt Jon Groenen said: “We know how concerning this incident is, both for the university community and for local residents here in Guildford, and our officers are working at pace to establish the full circumstances of what occurred. “There is nothing to suggest this incident is terror-related and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with it. “We continue to work closely with the university and at this time, I would ask people to refrain from speculating online to preserve the integrity of the investigation. If you have any information that could assist our inquiries, please contact us directly. “The victim is thankfully now in a stable condition. He remains in hospital and we continue to provide support to his family.” A University of Surrey spokesperson added: “We have been informed that our colleague is now in a stable condition and our entire community is relieved to hear this news. We wish him a full and speedy recovery. “We also want to take this opportunity to thank our campus safety team. They responded with professionalism and courage to this incident, and their commitment to keeping this community safe is something we are deeply proud of. Our thoughts are with all of them.” Explore more on these topics UK news news Share Reuse this content
Ex-wife of Dubai ruler's nephew in custody, prosecutors say 12 minutes ago Share Save Add as preferred on Google Sebastian Usher Global affairs reporter Supplied Zeynab Javadli divorced Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 2019 The ex-wife of a nephew of the ruler of Dubai has been taken into custody, authorities have said. Dubai Public Prosecution told the BBC that Zenab Javadli was detained following a complaint made by the father of her three children - her former husband, Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He alleged that she had abducted the children during a court-approved visitation session. Javadli's family and friends had lost contact with her since Tuesday night and had raised the alarm over her whereabouts. For almost two days, no news was received as to where Javadli or her children had gone. For months, she had barely left the house as she believed security officers were waiting to take her children from her and put her under arrest. Last year, her ex-husband lodged his complaint with the police accusing her of kidnapping their daughters. That was after the children changed hands between their parents several times, with each accusing the other of kidnap. Javadli - a former international gymnast - has also been facing potential arrest for e-crimes - online offences - in the UAE after she livestreamed one of the showdowns last year. AFP via Getty Images Javadli is a former gymnast who represented Azerbaijan at an international level At the time she explained her actions in a video message to the British human rights lawyer David Haigh, who has been advocating for her: "I knew that it was the last chance to be with my children as they would never let me see them again. I genuinely believed that it was my last chance, so I just opened a livestream and called for help." Lawyers acting for Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum have claimed in court hearings in the custody case over their children that she was an unfit mother who had failed to send her daughters to school, was living in a place unsuitable for the children when she was in a hotel, and that she had put the health of the youngest girl at risk. In a statement on Thursday evening, Dubai Public Prosecution said the matter remained under investigation and was subject to ongoing legal proceedings. "[We] will continue to take the necessary legal measures in accordance with applicable laws, while safeguarding the children's wellbeing and best interests," it added. In response, Haigh called on the UAE to immediately grant Javadli access to her lawyer, her consulate and her family and be released back to her home in Dubai.
