Image source, AFP via Getty Images Image caption, Marcelo Bielsa is manager a country at a World Cup for the third time in his career By Gary Rose BBC Sport journalist Published 16 minutes ago It is quite possible that nobody alive today has watched more football than Marcelo Bielsa. The 70-year-old is one of the most respected and influential coaches in the game, and that reputation has been earned from his borderline obsessive dedication to preparation for every single match he oversees. More than two decades ago he took 2,000 video tapes to Japan for the 2002 World Cup - when he was manager of Argentina - with those covering everything from clips of his players at their respective clubs to the opposition teams his side would come up against at the tournament. Thankfully, modern technology means suitcases packed with VHS tapes will no longer be necessary. But Bielsa will no doubt have a similar volume of clips with him in North America for the 2026 World Cup - where his Uruguay side will face Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde and Spain in the group stage. In, or out? The joy and despair of World Cup squad selection Published 21 May World Cup player signs petition calling for protection from extreme heat Published 20 May Empty rooms and Fifa cancellations - US hotels fear World Cup washout Published 20 May The making of Bielsa Born in Rosario, Argentina, Bielsa hails from a family of educated minds, with his brother having worked in politics and his sister a renowned architect. Both of those professions require analytical thinking - a gift Bielsa also possessed from childhood. However, he was drawn to football, not necessarily playing it but absorbing the tactics. Every day he would send his mother to the local newsagent to buy football magazines and newspapers, spending hours reading up as much as he could about how teams played and how different managers worked. Bielsa was still a capable but limited footballer. A defender but lacking in pace, he came through the youth system at his boyhood club Newell's Old Boys before frustrating spells in the lower leagues of Argentinian football meant he decided to call time on his playing career at the age of 25 to focus on coaching. His post-playing career started with the Buenos Aires university football team and, after two years there, he secured a position back at Newell's as a coach of the reserve team. Bielsa's frustration with his limitations as a player played a significant part in his coaching philosophy, as he focused on ensuring that any player he coached was able to get the maximum out of their ability. His training sessions were intense, with lots of focus on repetition - if a player did not have the talent to make something happen naturally then he would be sure to drill the processes into their minds. Bielsa was appointed Newell's manager in 1990 and his methods brought instant success as they won the Argentinian championship. A spell in Mexico followed before Bielsa returned to Argentina in 1997 to

Photograph: Andrew Caballero-Reynolds/AFP/Getty Images View image in fullscreen Beds are seen inside the ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ migrant detention center as Donald Trump tours the facility in Ochopee, Florida, on 1 July 2025. Photograph: Andrew Caballero-Reynolds/AFP/Getty Images ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ detainees say guards deny them food and clean water until they sign English documents Detainees say they’re given ‘rotten’ water and denied meals for not signing papers in English that they don’t understand Detainees at Florida’s notorious “ Alligator Alcatraz ” immigration jail said guards were denying them food and fresh water on Thursday until they signed documents presented to them in English that they did not understand. In an audio recording of a telephone call to an immigration advocacy group heard by the Guardian, more than half a dozen detainees alleged that the water given to them over the last three days was “rotten” and containing mosquito larvae, in an apparent attempt to pressure them to sign. During the call, all the detainees identified themselves by name and the section and cage number they are being held in. The Guardian is withholding those details because of the men’s stated fear of reprisals. “They took all the water, and they don’t want to give us water,” one detainee said in the call to a representative of the Workers Circle, an advocacy group that has acted as a liaison between detainees and their families. “They haven’t given us lunch, and they are mistreating us here. Right now, at this very moment, half past one in the afternoon, we haven’t had lunch here in Alcatraz, and they wanted to make us sign a paper in English that we don’t know what that paper says. “They’ve taken reprisals with us for not taking that paper, not signing that paper. They took away the water and medicine to people who need medication. Today the medicine came very late, but here we have people here who are diabetic, one here with high blood pressure.” View image in fullscreen An ambulance pulls in to the front entrance of the ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades on 1 June 2026. Photograph: Joe Raedle/Getty Images The detainee said he and others had been complaining for several days about the quality of the water they had been given, and on Thursday morning chants of “ agua, agua ” broke out when it was withheld altogether. “The water has pests, the water has a bad taste, [you] open the water tubs and they have mosquito larvae,” he said. Another detainee said the water was “stinky and rotten”, and that he saw mosquitoes emerging from a substance contained within it. He said nobody in his cell had yet signed any document. Reports last month said “Alligator Alcatraz”, operated by the state of Florida as an immigration jail on behalf of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforce

Lex Greensill leaves court after a hearing last year. Photograph: Sean Smith/The Guardian View image in fullscreen Lex Greensill leaves court after a hearing last year. Photograph: Sean Smith/The Guardian Financier Lex Greensill banned from running UK companies for nine years Founder of Greensill Capital says there was no finding he acted dishonestly after his company collapsed owing £1.6bn The disgraced former financier Lex Greensill has been banned from running a UK company for nine years after he was judged to be unfit because of the 2021 collapse of his £1.6bn supply chain invoicing firm. The government’s Insolvency Service said on Thursday that Greensill had signed a disqualification undertaking, bringing the case to an end before a trial was due to begin on 8 June. He had previously sought to challenge the proceedings against him but a court ruled against his efforts in March. Greensill, a 49-year-old Australian former sugar farmer, had risen rapidly to prominence in the financial world by lending money to companies secured against unpaid invoices. Greensill Capital collapsed into administration in March 2021 with liabilities of more than £1.6bn. The subsequent political and financial scandal dragged in the former prime minister David Cameron, who had worked for the company, and the Japanese investor Masayoshi Son, whose Softbank backed the Greensill group. The Treasury select committee found in July 2021 that Cameron had shown a “significant lack of judgment” in lobbying for Greensill Capital to join a government coronavirus pandemic scheme in 2020, when it was starting to struggle. The Insolvency Service said Greensill breached his legal duty to exercise reasonable care, skill and diligence as a company director, causing a loss of $440m to the Swiss bank Credit Suisse, which was later rescued by its rival, UBS . Duncan Beach, the chief executive at the Insolvency Service, said: “Director disqualifications exist to protect the public from those who have demonstrated they are unfit to run companies. A nine-year ban is a significant period – above the average for director disqualifications – and reflects the serious nature of Lex Greensill’s conduct.” The Insolvency Service had sought to disqualify Greensill for as long as 15 years. Greensill’s disqualification related particularly to his company’s lending to Katerra, a US construction company. Funds controlled by Credit Suisse bought the loans, which were backed by insurance. However, Greensill directed his companies to enter transactions that removed legal protections from the loan notes, despite lacking the written consents required by law. Credit Suisse ended up losing its investment. A spokesperson for Lex Greensill said: “After four years of investigation, this matter has concluded with no finding that Mr Greensill acted dishonestly or in bad faith.” Greensill still faces a separate civil action by administrators for Greensill Capital (UK), in which he is named as a defendant. He was a
